Breastfeeding FAQs

How can I tell if my baby is getting enough breast milk?

If you are nursing at least 8-10 times in 24 hours, and your baby is gaining weight as well as voiding and stooling regularly, he/she is probably getting enough breast milk. Also, your breasts feeling softer and lighter at the end of each feeding is a good indication.

Consult your lactation consultant or pediatrician if you have concerns.

How often should I breastfeed?

During the first few weeks, you will need to nurse often--about every 2 to 3 hours. Don't worry about overfeeding: your baby will stop eating when he/she has had enough. As your milk supply builds up and your baby learns how to nurse more efficiently, you will be able to go longer between feedings.

When should I start pumping?

The First Years recommends the miPump for 3 weeks+ post-partum. If your baby is less than 3 weeks old, we recommend working with a lactation consultant.

What is the shelf life?

Generally, 2 years or more. We've not had issues with products going bad, so this has not been a problem.

How do I find a lactation consultant in my area?

There are other wonderful product lines out there. However, our customers have found that the Bella B line strikes the best balance between natural and organic ingredients. They also love the feel and scent of Bella B products compared to other lines.

And our retail prices are reasonable at $10 - $20 retail, so moms can afford to keep using our products while enjoying truly premium products.

Ultimately, our exceptional results are the most important differentiator to other lines. We use several clinically-proven "boutique" ingredients, many of which are found in the most expensive department store cosmetics, but offered with natural formulations at a reasonable price.

Are there foods I shouldn't eat if I'm breastfeeding?

If you are breastfeeding, we recommend that you continue the diet you followed while pregnant. Generally speaking, you can eat anything you want to, in moderation. Limit your intake of caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, and soda.

Can I diet if I am breastfeeding?

Make sure that you eat a healthy diet and do not restrict your calorie intake. Many women find they lose weight just by breastfeeding and return to their pre-pregnancy weight by about six months postpartum. Losing weight too quickly can decrease your milk supply and leave you feeling tired.

Diet and exercise should be discussed with a medical professional.

Can I take medications if I am breastfeeding?

Consult a medical professional before you take medication if you are breastfeeding.

For more information we recommend reading A Medication Guide for Breastfeeding Moms written by Clinical Pharmacologist, Dr. Thomas W. Hale, and Dr. Ghia McAfee.

How should I treat sore nipples?

Sore nipples are caused by incorrect positioning and/or incorrect latch while breastfeeding.

Correct Positioning
Make sure your baby is level at your breast. Remember:
Tummy to tummy
Chest to chest
Nose and chin should touch the breast

Here are a couple of common positions. What's most important is that you choose a position that works best for you and your baby:

Cradle Hold - Hold your baby across your midsection so that you are stomach to stomach. His/her head should rest in the bend of your elbow with his/her mouth directly in front of your nipple.

Football/Clutch Hold - Lie baby next to you, with his/her legs tucked under your arm. You may want to lie them on a pillow for support. His/her head should rest in the palm of your hand and his/her back should be on your inner forearm. Tuck his/her feet slightly behind you.

Lying Down - Lie on your side and lay your baby next to you with his/her tummy to yours. Your nipple should be opposite his/her mouth.

Correct Latch
Align your nipple with your baby's nose and then tickle his/her nose with your nipple. When your baby opens his/her mouth wide, guide your baby onto your breast. Make sure your baby has a deep latch and is sucking your breast, not your nipple. If you need to unlatch your baby, place your finger in his/her mouth to break the suction.

Treatment
Rub breast milk on the nipple after each feeding and let dry. This helps to heal them.

The First Year's Soothing Lanolin Mist helps prevent and soothe dry, sore nipples. And since lanolin is safe for baby, there's no need to wash it away prior to breastfeeding. It's the only 100% natural, ultra-pure lanolin that doesn't require a messy or painful application.

Our Bella B line also include a selection of breastfeeding products that can help clean and soothe sore nipples. And since it's all-natural, it's safe for baby.

For other John Deere products including diecast, collectibles and ride-ons visit your local John Deere dealer, or one of the websites indicated above.

What is the difference between engorgement and fullness?

If your breasts, to the touch, feel firm like the tip of your nose, they are full. If your breasts feel hard like a table top, they are engorged. In addition to feeling hard, the skin on engorged breasts is taut and shiny.

Engorgement is a swelling of the breasts caused by veins expanding and pressure from new milk. Many women experience engorgement two to six days after delivery (when their milk comes in). Also, engorgement may occur if a feeding is missed or not enough milk is expressed from the breasts.

Engorged breasts are more prone to infections; thus, preventative measures should be taken. Preventative measures include, but are not limited to, bringing the baby to breast often, massaging the breasts, and applying ice after feeding.

Compass Travel Gear - Booster Seats FAQs

What are the height and weight requirements to use the Folding Booster Car Seat?

A child must be at least 30 lbs and 38' tall. A child cannot be more than 100 lbs or 57' tall. This will fit most children between 3 years old and 10 years old.

Does the Folding Booster Car Seat meet all Federal Safety Standards?

Yes.

What is a belt positioning booster car seat?

Some children's car seats (Convertible and Infant Car Seats) have integral belts meant to restrain a child in a crash. Some, like the Folding Booster Car Seat, use the automobile seatbelts and simply locate them properly to fit a child's smaller torso.

If the belt positioning booster simply uses the automobile's own restraint, why should I use it?

Belt positioning boosters do a much better job of properly positioning the automobile's own restraint, which is not designed optimally for children in the height and weight ranges.

Can the Folding Booster Car Seat be used with side impact airbags mounted in the back seats of automobiles?

Yes. Side impact airbags open down, in a vertical direction. They are not designed to open towards the passenger compartment. This makes them safe to use in conjunction with the Folding Booster Car Seat.

Can the Folding Booster Car Seat be used in the back seat of a small, extended cab pick-up truck?

No. These small cabs do not provide enough room for standard allowable head excursion movement. Therefore, the child may strike the back of the front seat.

The Folding Booster Car Seat is very lightweight. Is it sturdy enough?

Yes. Although the Folding Booster Car Seat is light for easy handling and to meet the government's weight limit standard for belt positioning boosters, it does not rely on weight to function properly.

Is the Folding Booster Car Seat easy to fold?

Yes, the Folding Booster Car Seat is very easy to fold. Just lift the green lock handle in the back of the seat, and the seat folds. It is even easier to unfold. Just pull it open.

Is the fold mechanism safe in a crash?

Yes, the fold is unrelated to crash safety. Like all belt positioning boosters, crash related forces are directed into the automobile seat belt. The belt positioning booster simply positions the automobile seat for optimal performance.

Does the Folding Booster Car Seat offer side impact protection?

Yes, the entire head area underneath the pad is lined with an engineered EPS foam liner commonly used in bicycle helmets and other safety related devices.

Are the instructions and labels available in Spanish?

Yes. The instructions and all labels are printed in English and Spanish. This website also has downloadable instructions available in Spanish. Simply use the Product Search field to search by the product name or model number (or, simply click on Our Brands, click the Travel Gear logo, and click on the image of your car seat). Instructions are located in the Product Documents section on the car seat's product detail page.

Why does the Folding Booster Car Seat not include the ability to remove the back, as some other boosters do?

We believe booster car seats that allow straps to be used to position the shoulder are clumsy and far too easy to misuse.

A leading consumer testing magazine recently criticized some booster car seats for the way they located the automobile shoulder belt. Does the Folding Booster Car Seat use the better type of shoulder belt location?

Yes. Some belt locators tend to prevent free movement of the automobile shoulder harness. The Folding Booster Car Seat has a large, open, and unrestrictive shoulder belt positioning.

Can a child use the Folding Booster Car Seat without assistance?

Older children can buckle themselves into the Folding Booster Car Seat. Of course, that is something we parents look forward to - when an older child can buckle herself or himself into the seat. But, of course, the adult must always check to be sure the child is properly buckled.

Will the Folding Booster Car Seat harm my automobile upholstery?

The Folding Booster Car Seat has a "Seat-Saver" base that has broad, rounded surfaces. It should not harm any upholstery.

Where are the instructions located? Are they secure?

Instructions are located in the red plastic molded pouch on the back of the seat. Tabs are designed to keep the instructions from falling out regardless of the position of the booster.

Can I use the Folding Booster Car Seat in an aircraft?

No, belt positioning boosters cannot be used with the lap belt only seat belt found on commercial aircraft.

Can the Folding Car Seat be used with a lap belt only?

No, belt positioning boosters cannot be used with a lap belt only.

Why is there a "Do not use after date" associated with the Folding Booster Car Seat?

All major manufacturers adhere to a seven year "expiration date" from the date of manufacture to insure that changes by automakers in seat technology, as well as advances in car seat technology, work together to enhance child restraint.

How do I register my car seat?

miPump FAQs

What should I do if I experience pain while pumping?

If you are experiencing pain, lower the suction level by pressing the down arrow on the front of your miPump. Always remember to increase the suction level gradually when you pump.

If you are still experiencing pain, be sure the shield is properly positioned on your breast.

If you are still experiencing pain, stop pumping and call a lactation consultant.

What do I do if I'm not getting any milk?

If you find you are not getting any milk while pumping and your baby is 3 weeks old or younger, we recommend you work with a lactation consultant.

If your child is older than 3 weeks and you find you are not getting any milk while pumping, first check that the AC adaptor is fully plugged into a working outlet OR that there are fresh batteries in the pump.

Next, confirm that the AC adaptor is fully plugged into either the back of the miPump OR the miPump cradle (miPump was designed to work both in and out of the cradle). If you choose to use the cradle, check that the pump is properly secured in the cradle by pushing down on the top of the pump firmly and gently.

If you are still not getting any milk while pumping, try increasing the suction using the arrows on the front of the miPump. The LED lights on the left of the pump show which of the 8 suction levels the pump is set to.

If you are still having problems, please contact Customer Service at 800-704-8697 for additional assistance.

If I bought the miPump double breast pump, can I use it as a single pump also?

Yes, simply disconnect the second pump and use the pump as a single.

Do I need to clean the tubing?

No, only air passes through the tubing, so it does not need to be cleaned.

Does the base charge the pump?

No, the pump is not charging while in the base. The miPump is energized by 4 AA batteries or the supplied AC adapter.

What is the best way to care for the pump?

It is important to thoroughly clean all parts of the pump according to the product instructions.

The tubing does not need to be cleaned. Only air passes through the tubes, and if water gets inside the tubing it will ruin the pump motor. To clean the exterior of the tubing use a clean damp cloth and wipe clean.

In addition to cleaning, mom should also gently lift the end of the flapper (as pictured) immediately before every pumping session. This simple step helps ensure that the flapper can move freely for optimum effectiveness.

Take & Toss

Where can I buy additional lids and/or straws for my Take & Toss cups and bowls?

You can purchase replacement Take & Toss lids and straws from our online Shop.

Travel Gear - Infant Seats FAQs

What are the height and weight requirements to use the Infant Car Seat?

A child must be a minimum of 4 lbs and a maximum of 22 lbs and must be under 30 inches in height. There is no age limitation.

Can the Infant Car Seat ever be used without the base?

No!!! Compass strives to reduce the potential for misuse by reducing the complexity of its seats. Reducing the number of ways a product can be used makes the product simpler and easier for the consumer to use. If it is simpler and easier, the chances are higher that it will be used properly. In this case, install the base for the Infant Car Seat, get it level, and then simply click the seat in and out. The only adjustment that needs to be made is the height of the shoulder harness straps! No other infant seat is as simple to use.

Does the Infant Car Seat meet all Federal Safety Standards?

Yes.

Is the Infant Car Seat crash tested?

Yes. It is crash tested to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Standard 213.

Must the Infant Car Seat always be used rear-facing?

Yes.

Can the Infant Car Seat be used with side impact airbags mounted in the back seats of automobiles?

Sometimes! Most side impact airbags are "roof mounted" airbags that deploy downward like a curtain. The Infant Car Seat can be used when the automobile has "roof mounted, curtain deploying" airbags. You MUST CHECK your automobile's owners manual. If any other type of airbag is used, you must follow the recommendation of the automobile manufacturer.

Can I use "after-market" products with the Infant Car Seat?

We do not recommend the use of after-market products with the Infant Car Seat.

What is unique about the Infant Car Sea

The first unique feature is that the Infant Car Seat has a unique shell design that allows it to be bigger, but stay as light as any other infant seat on the market.

The second unique feature is that it has a full EPS (bicycle helmet foam) foam liner throughout the entire shell that absorbs energy to reduce the effects of a crash on the infant.

The third unique feature is that the Infant Car Seat has the deepest side wings of any infant seat to help contain the child in the event of a crash.

The fourth unique feature is that the Infant Car Seat uses two separately attached LATCH points. This reduces lateral movement of the seat in the event of a side impact collision.

The fifth unique feature is that the Infant Car Seat's shoulder belt positions can be quickly adjusted without unthreading and rethreading the harness.

The sixth unique feature is that the Infant Car Seat has a built-in lock off system that eliminates the need to use a confusing locking clip.

The seventh unique feature is that the Infant Car Seat has the seat angle adjuster located in the rear, which is the accessible portion of a rear-facing seat!

Does the Infant Car Seat offer side-impact protection?

Yes. The entire seat shell is lined with an engineered EPS foam liner commonly used in bicycle helmets and other safety related devices. This significantly reduces the effect of a head strike against the shell. However, it is important to contain the head in the case of a crash to avoid the head striking the window or a protruding vehicle. So the Infant Car Seat has the largest side wings of any Infant Car Seat 7 1/2" high!

Does the Folding Booster Car Seat offer side impact protection?

Yes, the entire head area underneath the pad is lined with an engineered EPS foam liner commonly used in bicycle helmets and other safety related devices.

Will the Infant Car Seat harm my automobile upholstery?

The Infant Car Seat has a "Seat-Saver" base that has broad, rounded surfaces. It should not harm any upholstery.

Where are the instructions located? Are they secure?

Instructions are located in the red plastic molded pouch on the back of the seat. Tabs are designed to keep the instructions from falling out regardless of the position of the booster.

Can I use the Folding Booster Car Seat in an aircraft?

No, belt positioning boosters cannot be used with the lap belt only seat belt found on commercial aircraft.

Can the Folding Booster Car Seat be used with a lap belt only?

No, belt positioning boosters cannot be used with a lap belt only.

Why is there a "Do not use after date" associated with the Infant Car Seat?

All major manufacturers adhere to a seven year "expiration date" from the date of manufacture to insure that changes by automakers in seat technology, as well as advances in car seat technology, work together to enhance child restraint.

Why is it important to level the seat to the right position? How do I do it?

Adjusting an infant seat to the right level is important because infant seats are specifically designed to control pressure on the shoulders, spine, and neck by controlling how far the seat can rotate in the event of a crash. For any infant seat to work as designed, it is important to have the seat at the proper angle at the time of installation. How?

  • Check to make sure vehicle is on a level surface.
  • Place the seat in the base and check the level indicator to see if the base is level. Level is indicated by the ball being completely in the green area.
  • Turn the yellow height adjust knob clockwise to raise the base or counter clockwise to lower the base angle.
  • The base is not level and the seat back is not at 45 degrees unless the ball is in the green area.

What is the LATCH anchorage system? How is it used?

The LATCH system is an alternative method to using the automobile's harness system in order to anchor the child restraint device to the automobile. The LATCH system has been designed together by the manufacturers of child car seats, the automobile manufacturers, and NHTSA in order to reduce misuse.

Every automobile manufactured today is required to have LATCH anchor points in the rear seats. These points are achieved by the auto companies by adding a structural round steel bar to the car frame that is located just inside the seat bite (that is where the seat belt buckles are located).

To use the Infant Car Seat with the LATCH bars, use the special LATCH connectors located on both sides of the Infant Car Seat base. Compass uses only the premium, state-of-the-art SafeGuard® LATCH connectors manufactured by Indiana Mills Manufacturing Industry (IMMI), the world's leader in high quality harness and buckle systems.

How to use?

  • Consult your automobile's owners manual or manufacturer for location and availability of LATCH anchor points.
  • Press in on the red LATCH release button to disengage the connector from the LATCH storage compartment.
  • Attach the right and left LATCH to the anchor points.
  • Press down on the base with your knee and pull up on the webbing loop until the webbing is taught.
  • Check level indicator to ensure the ball is in the green area. Turn the yellow adjust knob clockwise to raise the base angle or counter clockwise to lower the base angle.
  • Check the base for movement at the belt path. Base should not move more than one inch in any direction.
  • If the base moves, repeat steps until all steps are met.

What is a locking clip and when do I need to use it?

A locking clip or a built-in lock off is used when the LATCH system is not used, and the automobile's harness is used to secure the child restraint. Many automobiles use seat belts that have *free sliding buckles (latch plates)*, that is, where the buckle can slide freely along the auto harness. Please consult your automobile's owners manual or your dealer to determine if your automobile has such a system. If your auto has seat belts with a free sliding buckle (latch plate), you must use either a locking clip or the built-in lock off located on the base of the Infant Car Seat. However, we recommend the use of a locking clip or the built-in lock off at all times.

To use the locking clip:

  • Locate the locking clip on the bottom of the base.
  • Follow the base installation steps located in the instructions.
  • Thread the locking clip on the belt as close to the latch plate (buckle) as close as possible - within one inch. Please refer to page 17 of your instructions for a diagram of threading.

What is the built-in lock-off?

The built-in lock-off is an alternative to the locking clip. The lock off is the red "arm" located at the center of the belt path on the base.

  • Follow the base installation steps located in the instructions.
  • Secure the belt underneath the built-in lock off by pressing the built-in lock off until you hear an audible click. It should not swing freely. Please refer to page 15 of your instructions for a depiction of proper belt position and lock off usage.

What is the proper position of the handle in use?

Never! Your name and address on your product registration are strictly for use in any potential recall. The First Years will never sell your name.

What is the proper position of the shoulder harnesses?

The harness should be at or BELOW the shoulder of the child. This prevents any slack from being introduced into the system in the event of a forward facing crash as the seat rotates forward.

How do I adjust the shoulder harness position?

TO adjust the shoulder harness position:

  • Loosen the harness system.
  • Pull out the yellow adjustment knob located on the seat back and slide the adjustment to either the upper and lower slot depending on the height of the child. Please see question 24 or page 25 in your instructions for the proper location based on the child's height.
  • Release the yellow knob. You should hear an audible click and the knob should no longer slide freely.
